Local students recognized for Constitution competition win

Posted: Updated:

Local students were honored Wednesday after winning a nationwide political competition.

The Portland City Council recognized the Grant High School Constitution Team for taking first place in the "We the People" contest in Washington, DC.

The team beat out 56 other teams from around the country.

They were judged on simulated congressional hearings and knowledge of the Constitution and Bill of Rights.

Students said just participating in the event was the experience of a lifetime, and winning was a nice bonus.

This is the second year in a row that an Oregon team has won the competition.

In 2012, the team from Lincoln High School took first place.
