Police: Stranger tried to lure Lake Oswego boy into van

Posted: Updated:

A driver in Lake Oswego tried to lure a teenage boy walking home from school into his van, according to a report received by Lake Oswego police.

It happened at about 2:30 p.m. Wednesday near Ninth Street and C Avenue, police said.

Neighbors told FOX 12 that the boy, who is a student at Lake Oswego Junior High School, had just stepped off his school bus when a white full-sized van approached him near a grassy area across the street.

The man tried to lure the boy into the van, police said. He reportedly claimed the boy's mother had sent him to pick the boy up, they added.

When the man couldn't properly name the boy's parents, the boy refused to get into the van and took off, neighbors said. He walked a different route home to make sure he wasn't being followed again, they added.

The suspect is described as a white man, about 30 years old, with brown hair and a brown beard. He was wearing a white tank top, police said.

Officers received the report about an hour after the incident occurred. When they responded to the area, the suspect was gone.

Police encourage parents to discuss with their children what to do when confronted by a stranger. It is also strongly recommended that police be contacted immediately if a situation like this happens.

"It's not like when we were kids," said Jeff Hagen, whose teenage son attends Lake Oswego High School. "You know, everything was OK. And now you have to worry about everything."

"It can happen anywhere," said parent Stan Fenton. "You really gotta be careful wherever you are and educate your kids."

Anyone with information about the reported case is asked to call Lake Oswego police.
