Metro school board details cuts to lessen budget shortfall
NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -
Metro Nashville Public Schools is having to do something that many families and businesses are also facing: more with less. And now the school board is detailing how it plans to close a big budget gap.
Last week, the Metro Council approved a budget for the district that is about $18 million short of what school officials wanted.
The school board discussed the budget shortfall during its regular meeting Tuesday, and the plan calls for eliminating 44 district jobs.
Twenty of the positions will be teachers in English-as-Second-Language programs and the others will come from the district's central office.
Other cost-saving measures the board is discussing include department budget cuts, freezing salary step increases and reducing salary raises for district employees.
All of this comes as the district is required to increase funding for other areas, including additional insurance and benefits, adding 21 teachers due to anticipated growth and funding for charter schools.
The district also anticipates receiving less federal funding.
"You must prioritize what programs and services we need, what the needs of our students are, what's going to help us deliver the best education for our students and then you work your budget out accordingly," said Metro schools spokeswoman Olivia Brown.
