Former students who died serving their country will not be forgotten at Prairie High School.

A memorial showcase was built near the school's main office and dedicated at a ceremony June 13. The display includes photos and information about three former Prairie High School students and military members who were killed serving in the Middle East.

Cpl. Jeremiah Johnson died Jan. 5, 2007 as a result of injuries sustained during fighting in Iraq. Marine Cpl. Cedric Bruns was killed in 2003 in Kuwait.

The third service person memorialized is Kane Funke, a member of the Marines who was killed in August 2004 in Iraq. He was a student in the Evergreen School District and attended ROTC for one period a day at Prairie High School.

Parents of Johnson and Bruns attended the memorial's dedication ceremony. Several members of the Patriot Guard organization arrived on their motorcycles for the dedication as well.

Administrators said senior Casey McNicholas was the driving force behind the idea, with the assistance of fellow students Samantha Willson and Brett Udy. McNicholas said he hopes this project is copied by other schools.

"What if every high school in the country had a memorial like this?" McNicholas said. "What if every high school in the state did?"

McNicholas and Willson are enrolled in the school's junior ROTC program.

Prairie and Battle Ground high schools are the only schools with junior ROTC programs in southwest Washington.
