Posted: Updated:

Powell's Books is calling on local artists to show off their skills for its first ever design contest.

Artists are asked to submit designs for a seasonal tote bags.

Three winners will receive Powell's gift cards as prizes and get their design on a tote.

"We're so appreciative of the support customers have shown us over the years, and we thought it would be fun to give our community the chance to contribute to the face of Powell's in a unique way," says Miriam Sontz, CEO of Powell's Books. "This is an opportunity for customers to show us what Powell's means to them. We're excited to see what they come up with."

To take part, participants must submit an original design inspired by the legendary bookstore. It must include one of the company's official logos or the words "Powell's Books."   Only three colors can be used and it must fit within a 11-by-10-inch area.

The deadline is July 17.

On July 19, Powell's staff will announce the 10 contest finalists based on factors including style, originality, creativity and artistic quality.

A panel designated by the company will then choose three winning designs from the finalists to be featured on limited edition Powell's book bags.

The winners will be announced on July 29 and will receive one of three Powell's Gift Cards valued at $500 (grand prize), $300 (first prize), and $200 (second prize).
