SCAPPOOSE, OR (KPTV) -

Oregon State Police released the names Wednesday of two people involved in a fatal crash that shut down Highway 30.

State police said a Mazda SUV driven by 39-year-old Mark Thomas, from Oregon City, was heading west on the highway near Scappoose when he crossed the center median and crashed into the side of an eastbound Buick Century.

The two cars came to rest several hundred feet apart and partially blocked the highway.

The Buick's driver, 65-year-old Wayne McCormick, of Scappoose, died at the scene.

A LifeFlight helicopter rushed Thomas to Legacy Emanuel Medical Center with serious injuries. Police said those injuries were not life-threatening.

McCormick and Thomas were both using seat belts and their cars' airbags did deploy, police said.

The highway was closed at Wildwood Road for almost five hours to allow for the police investigation.

Investigators are still trying to determine what caused Thomas to drive into oncoming traffic.
