VANCOUVER, WA (KPTV) -

A 100-pound black bear dashed into the middle of Interstate 205 and collided with a car Wednesday afternoon.

The crash involving a Honda Civic happened around noon near the 134th Street exit in Salmon Creek.

The car only sustained minor damage to the front bumper, but the bear wasn't as lucky.

"Usually, if you hit them broad side or from the rear end, they usually roll and get up and run away. That happens frequently," said Capt. Murray Schlenker, from the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife. "But this bear took the brunt on the side of the head so I imagine it died really quick."

Officials said they "returned the bear back to nature."

Bear sightings have been a common occurrence lately in the Portland metro area. Schlenker said sightings will continue through the summer months because bears are more motivated now than any other time of year.

"There's two things on a bear's mind. Adult males want to find females and food. Adult females want to find males and food," he said.
