There are about 9,000 old mines throughout the state of Arizona, and every day a crew from the Arizona Mining Department fills at least one.

Joe Hart, the head inspector with the department said the area affected by the actively burning Doce Fire has about 1,700 old mines.

"Some of them are really, really dangerous," says Joe Hart.

Mr. Hart's main concern these days is that firefighters going into areas where vegetation has burned, is that they will fall in by accident.

"That's where the real hazard is. Someone can stumble on one of those, being in a hurry in trying to protect themselves, or help someone else. They are anywhere from 20 to 600 to 1,000 feet," he adds.

Linda Jackson, with the Prescott National Forest tells CBS 5 News that they looked at old mine maps before hot shot crews started battling the fire.

"The mines are not where we are dealing with this fire," Jackson said.

As of Friday, the Doce Fire had burned about 6,300 acres, and was 15 percent contained.
