A child who has already been through so much in his young life recently came face-to-face with a wolverine.

And for Cason Vandehey, it was a dream come true.

The Make-A-Wish Foundation teamed up with Alaska Airlines to give the 9-year-old boy an up close and personal experience with his favorite animal.

They sent him to Haines, AK, to visit the Kroschel Wildlife Center and its wolverine.

"It was incredible," Cason said. "I'm surprised it didn't rip off my face."

Since Cason was a baby, he's been suffering from a rare lung disease that is still a big mystery for doctors.

One thing that made him very happy was a documentary about wolverines. So, the Make-A-Wish Foundation stepped in for a first-of-its-kind wish.

Cason and his family received the VIP treatment from Alaska Airlines. It was Cason's first ever flight.

His parents said not only was it a family vacation they never would have been able to afford with mounting medical bills, it was also a much needed escape from the everyday life of their sick little boy.

"There, he was just, he was a 9-year-old boy. He wasn't a sick boy. He wasn't a boy that takes medicine every day. He was a 9-year-old boy who experienced everything he wanted to experience," said Angela Vandehey.

Cason first learned about the trip during the Rose Festival Grand Floral Parade. He got to ride on the Alaska Airlines float during the annual celebration.

"In Portland and in Alaska, everybody was just so willing to give Cason the best experience he could get while he was there," Mike Vandehey said.

Cason's not done meeting wild animals just yet, either. He said now that he's met a wolverine, he next wants to meet a cheetah.
