Man accused of killing Rainier Police Chief moved back to jail

ST HELENS, OR (KPTV) -

The man accused of killing the police chief of Rainier is back in the Columbia County Jail.

Daniel Butts is accused of shooting and killing Chief Ralph Painter in January of 2011. He was transferred from the Oregon State Hospital to the jail Thursday.

Back in March, Butts was transferred to the hospital after a judge decided he needed further mental evaluation before declaring if he was competent enough for trial.

Because doctors have now completed their mental evaluations, Butts no longer needs to be housed at the hospital.  It is unclear what the results of the evaluation are at this point.

A judge is still deciding whether to grant a defense motion to force Butts to take his psychiatric medication.
