Former student sues ex-teacher charged with sexually abusing him

A former Sherwood High School teacher accused of having sex with students is now facing a multimillion dollar lawsuit.

Denise Keesee is charged with six counts of second-degree sex abuse. Prosecutors allege she had sex with two former students between 2006 and 2012.

One of the alleged victims is suing Keesee and the Sherwood School District for $5.1 million, alleging he suffered psychological injuries such as anxiety, guilt and substance abuse.

The lawsuit, filed last week, says the student thought he had a consensual sexual relationship with Keesee until he spoke with the Washington County District Attorney's Office this spring.

"My experience is teenage boys who are molested by older women suffer much the same kinds of problems as teenage girls who are molested by older men," said Randall Vogt, the Portland attorney representing the former student. "And in fact, boys tend to make the problems worse by bottling it up and not addressing it."

Vogt said the victim, who is now in his early 20s, is dyslexic and has other learning disabilities and a low IQ.

The lawsuit alleges Keesee "sought and gained the friendship, admiration and obedience" of the then high school sophomore while she was his teacher in a special education math class.

That led to her touching his leg in class and eventually led to sexual contact during the 2006-2007 school year, according to the lawsuit.

"The predatory nature of the abuse was really quite striking to me," said Vogt.

At the time, Keesee's husband was the school resource officer at Sherwood High School.

The lawsuit said Officer Adam Keesee harassed the student to keep him from coming forward, including "pulling him over and pointing his firearm at plaintiff during traffic stops."

Adam Keesee was reassigned to patrol duties in January while the investigation into his wife was underway.

Late Thursday afternoon, the Sherwood Police Department announced they placed Adam Keesee on leave pending the outcome of the criminal investigation into his wife. They released no other comment.

The lawsuit also alleges that a Sherwood High School vice principal and counselor did not believe the student when he reported the abuse and did not inform police or Child Protective Services.

A spokeswoman for the district said they could not comment on the lawsuit because they have not received a copy of the lawsuit.
