County donates foreclosed house to charity

Posted: Updated:

Multnomah County and a local nonprofit group are working together to get families into empty homes.

A home located on 28th Avenue and Sumner Street in Northeast Portland was foreclosed on about a year ago. County commissioners then donated the home to Community Visions, which has renovated the home to sell it.

In order to buy the property, buyers must meet certain requirements.

"Through this program we'll have someone who makes $54,000 a year with a family of four to move into this three-bedroom home," said Loretta Smith, a Multnomah County Commissioner. "It stays at an affordable rate for the life of the loan which is about 30 years. It's going to be huge for a family to come in here."

Smith said the program is a win-win for everyone and the county can feel good about turning a negative into a positive.
