Columbia River Crossing project killed after Washington fails to pass funding

Posted: Updated:

Washington State lawmakers failed to pass a key transportation package that would have provided Washington's share of the costs to build the new I-5 bridge.

Without the funding, the Columbia River Crossing project is dead.

Project managers have begun to close down the project.

Oregon Gov. John Kitzhaber released a statement that read in part, "I am extremely disappointed that our legislative partners in the Washington State Senate failed to address the clear and present safety and economic need for this essential I-5 bridge."

Governor John Kitzhaber also said, "Without bi-state funding, I have asked ODOT to review all of the work on the Oregon side of the project to determine if any stand-alone investments could be made to improve safety and reduce congestion on a smaller scale."
