Authorities have identified a woman who drowned at a Lincoln City beach last week as 54-year-old Kathryn Agnes Gent of Vancouver.
Oregon State Police Lt. Gregg Hastings says Gent and her 23-year-old daughter got caught by a rip current, a strong outward flow of water.
The daughter was able to get back to shore Friday morning, but her mother disappeared for several minutes before being found face down in the water near the shore.
Experts say the best way to escape a rip current is to swim parallel to the shore.
