HAZLEHURST, GA (WTOC) -

A Hazlehurst man who was arrested connection with the death of his 5-month-old baby is now charged with felony murder.

Jimmy Ray Creamer Jr. had been charged with first-degree cruelty to children and aggravated battery. He's now charged with felony murder.

Authorities were notified on June 17 by the Georgia Division of Family and Children Services that a baby was being treated at Memorial University Medical Center with suspicious injuries. Investigators with Hazlehurst police and a special agent with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation went to Savannah to investigation.

An investigation led to Creamer Jr.'s arrest on June 24, according to police. Authorities were notified on July 2 that the infant had died.

He appeared in Jeff Davis County Magistrate Court at 2 p.m. His attorneys asked for a preliminary hearing, which is scheduled for July 10.

The prosecuting attorney has a scheduled vacation that day, so the case will only be continued to August. Creamer Jr. will remain in custody in the Jeff Davis County Detention Center in Hazlehurst until his preliminary hearing.
