Missing bunny: Police investigating rabbit theft as a felony

Posted: Updated:

A giant rabbit known throughout a southeast Portland neighborhood was stolen from its outdoor cage.

Bonnie the 19-pound Flemish giant white albino rabbit was taken Sunday night or early Monday morning from a home on the 2200 block of Southeast Woodward Street.

The owners said they woke up Monday morning, and Bonnie was gone.

The bunny is mostly blind, but the owners said Bonie was especially popular with the kids in the neighborhood.

Kezia Steinkamp said she has no idea why anyone would steal her rabbit, but she admitted there was a strange situation a few weeks back.

Steinkamp said she was contacted by an animal rights activist who told her that she should take the rabbit out of the outdoor cage, and keep it inside.

Steinkamp said the rabbit is kept outside because she was not able to housetrain it. She said it wasn't possible for the rabbit to escape, because of how the latches work on its cage.

Police said it's not known if the incident with the so-called activist is connected to this case. Detectives are investigating the situation as a theft of a companion animal, which is a class-C felony.

The owners have worked with the Oregon Humane Society to accept the rabbit from anyone who brings it in to the shelter, no questions asked.
