JEFFERSON, OR (KPTV) -

A teen riding in the bed of a pickup going 50 mph fell out on a curve and suffered critical injuries.

It happened at 11:44 a.m. Thursday in the 1500 block of Talbot Road Southeast in Jefferson. Deputies were called to the scene and found a 17-year-old boy from Salem lying on the side of the road unconscious.

An off-duty nurse who was passing by at the time alerted deputies and provided aid to the boy until an ambulance arrived.

Investigators said the teen, who has not yet been identified, was riding in the back of a Dodge truck while putting up posters for a rodeo in the Jefferson area. As the truck hit a curve, the boy was sitting up on the bed rail and fell out.

The 18-year-old driver, who is not expected to face charges, said he was driving 50 mph in the posted 55 mph zone.

The Marion County Sheriff's Office said riding in the bed of a truck is illegal if you are under the age of 18, seats with seat belts are available or if you are seated anywhere other than down and inside of the bed floor.

The teen injured in the fall was listed in critical condition Thursday.
