Illegal fireworks to blame for Sellwood house fire

PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

Illegal fireworks sparked a fire at a Sellwood neighborhood home Thursday night in southeast Portland.

The fire started just before 11 p.m. in some bushes near Southeast Glenwood Street and Milwaukie Avenue.

By the time crews arrived, the fire had spread into the attic of a duplex.

A downed power line made it difficult for firefighters to take on the fire, but they were eventually able to stamp out the flames.

Witnesses said they saw someone light a mortar round, throw it and then take off.

"They were setting off fireworks in the parking lot behind my house. The hedge must have gone up in flames," Reedy said.

Reedy said she lived in the home for seven years, but she said she already planned to move because the owner was planning on putting in condos.

There's no word yet on how much damage was caused from the fire.

The Red Cross is working to help Reedy find a new place to live.
