Cross set on fire outside southern Oregon church

Posted: Updated:

A cross burned outside a Medford church and investigators believe the fire was started by arsonists.

Medford police and firefighters were called out to the Zion Lutheran Church at 506 W. Fourth St. around 2 a.m. Friday.

The large cross in front of the church was fully engulfed in flames, along with surrounding brush. The main building was also damaged by the fire.

Witnesses saw two males, unknown ages, throw an object at the cross, causing it to catch on fire.

Another fire burned a vacant house being remodeled at 1704 W. Main St. in Medford. Firefighters put it out, but not before the fire caused substantial damage.

The house fire was also ruled to be arson and is consistent with the dozens of other arson fires at vacant homes that have been occurring over the last several months in the area, according to Medford police.

There is no suspect information.

If you know anything about these cases, you're asked to call Medford police at 541-770-4783.
