Paramedics walked out to their ambulance stuck in a sinkhole in downtown Kansas City Friday afternoon.

"The ambulance was basically parked on Walnut just south of 11th Street. The crew was outside the vehicle, they came back out to the vehicle, they did not have a patient. They found the ambulance sunk in a hole," said Kansas City Fire Department Division Chief Michael Latta.

It was an odd sight for about 30 minutes Friday afternoon. Kansas City Fire Department ambulance 5916 sat next to a curb with a wheel seemingly gone.

"Right now, we don't see any physical damage to the undercarriage, just to the container that drops the snow chains out of the driver side," Latta said.

The emergency medical technicians tried to drive it out, but the ambulance started digging further into the pavement. Latta advised that, if other motorists end up in a similar situation, it's better to just clear the area.

"If it starts to sink, get out of the vehicle, obviously we don't know what's underneath it and how big it can get," he said.

It took a tow truck, and about seven people to get the ambulance unstuck.

Kansas City Water crews ran a camera through a nearby sewer to try and find the leak they believe caused the pavement to give way. A water department spokesperson said no one lost water service.

Crews will have to cut off water once they find what needs to be repaired, but they think they can get it fixed overnight at a time that inconveniences the least amount of people possible.

"I'm not aware of any construction or previous hole. They just pulled over, exited the vehicle, when they came back it was sunk," Latta said.

No injuries were reported. The EMTs were able to drive the ambulance away.

The fire department said they'll be doing plenty of road testing to make sure the area is safe to drive.
