Police: 18-year-old sexually abused autistic girl on way to church

An 18-year-old in Kelso is accused of sexually abusing an autistic child.

David Cahill was arraigned in court Monday on charges of child rape and child molestation.

The investigation began in April when the alleged victim told a school counselor that her "cousin" had touched her inappropriately, according to court documents. Investigators said Cahill is not related to the 13-year-old girl, but they did know each other.

The girl, who police said was nonsensical at times due to her autism, said Cahill would sexually abuse her in an alley as they walked to church.

Cahill was interviewed by detectives in May and admitted knowing the girl was autistic and 12 and 13 years old when the abuse happened. He described her as having the mental capacity of a 6-year-old child, according to a probable cause statement.

Cahill showed detectives the path to church, which he told the girl was a shortcut, on a Google map. He admitted various forms of abuse and said the girl at least five times told him "no" during the first incident.

"Cahill said (the girl) told him 'no,' but her body told him 'yes,'" according to court documents.

Cahill told police the abuse happened at least twice before his 18th birthday and twice after. He said once he turned 18, he felt what he was doing was wrong.

Police said Cahill takes drugs for a mood disorder, as well as anxiety medication. He told investigators he suffers from ADHD and ODD. He was in special education classes at Mark Morris High School, but was denied developmental disability service because he was too high functioning.

Police said Cahill appears to have some "mental issues," court documents state, but because he's a highly functioning adult man who admitted to sexually abusing a child and knowing it was wrong, he was arrested.
