KEIZER, OR (KPTV) -

A 17-year-old girl from Salem died Monday afternoon after an Amtrak passenger train carrying 366 passengers hit her.

The crash was northeast of Keizer on the Union Pacific Tracks north of Chemawa Road.

Marion County Deputy Jeremy Landers says he first got the call just before 3:30 in the afternoon.

The train left Portland earlier in the day and was headed to Klamath Falls.

It was going about 60 mph when it hit the teen.

Deputies say the engineer sounded the train's whistles and rang the emergency bells several times, but the teen did not respond.

He then started the emergency braking process, but couldn't stop before hitting her.

The identity of the teen is being withheld until the family can be notified.

The train was delayed about an hour and 15 minutes before continuing on its way, but the tracks will stay closed for the rest of the investigation.
