School bus crashes into 2 people in SE Portland - KPTV - FOX 12

Woman hit and killed by school bus in southeast Portland

Posted: Updated:

A husband and wife walking in a crosswalk were struck by a school bus in southeast Portland Tuesday afternoon.

Portland police said the woman suffered traumatic injuries, and paramedics rushed her to a Portland hospital. Shortly after 5:30 p.m., police said Renee Bates, 43, of Portland, died.

Her husband, Shawn Bates, 43, did not require any medical attention.

A preliminary investigation showed the couple was walking in the crosswalk eastbound from the northwest corner of the intersection at Southeast 148th Avenue and Division Street. The school bus crashed into them in the right-turn-only lane.

Shawn Bates spoke with FOX 12 near his home on Tuesday night.

He said he and his wife had just gotten off a TriMet bus and were on their way to the Fred Meyer store across the street when the crash happened.

The couple was about a third of the way into the crosswalk from the street when the bus hit them, Shawn Bates said. He yelled and tried to go after his wife, but it was too late, he added.

John Worden told FOX 12 he was right behind Renee Bates at the time of the crash and believes the pedestrians had the right of way.

"We stopped until it was green," Worden said. "We proceeded to go across. Unfortunately the lady was right in front of the bus when the driver took off. Didn't see her or anything. It was horrible. The first thing I thought of was to say a prayer."

Shawn Bates described his wife as a nice, wonderful woman and mother. She smiled a lot and had a great sense of humor, he told FOX 12.

"It really gets me right here," said Frances, who lives in the same apartment complex as Bates. "She was just a sweet lady, very sweet. She went out of her way to be kind to people. She was one in a million, I guess you could say, to have her as a neighbor."

Shawn Bates said his wife had surgery within the past year because of a brain tumor, then was diagnosed with Meningitis. The family was also forced to move to a different apartment within their complex because of a fire that broke out in a neighbor's unit, he said.

The bus involved in Tuesday's crash is operated by First Student for the West Linn-Wilsonville School District. Two children were on board at the time. They were not hurt, investigators said.

The bus driver, Billie Neel, 55, of Gladstone, stayed at the scene after the crash and is cooperating with the investigation, police said.

The Portland Police Bureau's Major Crash Team is investigating the circumstances of the crash. No citations have been issued, investigators said.

First Student and the West Linn-Wilsonville School District could not be reached for comment.
