PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

A man arrested in North Carolina on murder charges for a Portland cold case from 1997 will spend more than 16 years behind bars.

Samuel Etheridge, 47, agreed to a plea deal last month for the 1997 death of John Phillips. The 59-year-old victim was killed at an apartment on the 3900 block of North Albina Avenue.

Police did not release the cause of death or the relationship of the two men.

Portland Police Bureau Cold Case Homicide Unit detectives began investigating the case in January 2012. By April, they connected Etheridge to the crime and obtained an arrest warrant. He was then arrested in Dare County, NC, 3,000 miles away from Portland.

Etheridge pleaded guilty to first degree-manslaughter charges Wednesday as part of the plea deal. He was sentenced to 16 years and eight months in prison.
