PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

Shawn and Renee Bates were on their way to the grocery store when tragedy struck.

A school bus hit the couple as they were crossing Southeast 148th Avenue at Division Street, fatally injuring Renee Bates. The school bus was turning onto Southeast Division using a right-turn-only lane after stopping at a yield sign, according to witnesses.

Shawn Bates was not hurt.

"The bus was stopped at a full stop," he recalled. "We went to cross and made it about a third of the way and the bus started coming."

Shawn Bates said he tried to grab his wife, who was a few steps ahead of him.

"The bus hit me first and pushed me back a little bit," he said. "And the bus hit her and she fell and the bus driver kept going and the wheel ended up being on her chest."

The crash is under investigation and police have not issued any citations.

Portland police said the driver, Billie Neel, of Gladstone, was not impaired at the time of the crash. She stayed at the scene of the crash and is cooperating with the investigation.

Neel has worked for First Student, the transportation company that operates the bus, since 1989. She has a clean driving record.

Shawn Bates said Renee Bates was a waitress who supported the family. He is unable to work because of a disability, he said.

He described his wife as a caring mother who loved her 10-year-old son, animals and being outdoors.

"There's so much more. She was just a fantastic person, she was just wonderful," he said. "She was my best friend. I miss her. So much."
