Shut down: I-84 eastbound closed all weekend for repaving project

Posted: Updated:

A major interstate construction project is impacting tens of thousands of drivers this weekend.

Eastbound lanes of I-84 closed at 10 p.m. Friday and the interstate won't reopen until 5 a.m. Monday.

The Oregon Department of Transportation is used radio spots, social media, a website and fliers to alert drivers about the closure.

It's the first of three planned weekend closures as ODOT begins to repave the 5.5 miles of I-84 between Interstate 5 and Interstate 205.

ODOT said it is the busiest stretch of roadway in Oregon, used by about 171,700 drivers each day.

"It'll be inconvenient," said driver Tara Herivel. "We'll probably use the side streets, but it'll be inconvenient."

A variety of east-west alternate routes are available during the closures, including Lombard Street, Columbia Boulevard, Sandy Boulevard, Burnside Street and Powell Boulevard.

ODOT is advising drivers to plan ahead and map out an alternate route in advance, expect heavier traffic than usual on the alternate routes and take public transit when possible.

Despite ODOT's effort to spread the word, many people told FOX 12 they were unaware of the planned closure.

"We had no idea at all, no warnings," said Memry Smith, the manager at Dove Vivi on Glisan in northeast Portland.

She isn't sure how the closure will impact business, but she said it could provide a boost as more drivers are diverted onto side streets.

"It's going to be very interesting," said Smith. "We always have been a neighborhood restaurant so I would imagine for the most part it'll be the same. But we haven't encountered anything like this before so, at the same time, it'll be an experiment."
