MCMINNVILLE, OR (KPTV) -

A covered structure in a McMinnville park burned early Thursday morning, and investigators believe the fire is suspicious.

A police officer discovered the fully engulfed fire at Lower City Park at 12:35 a.m. The McMinnville Fire Department responded and quickly put the fire out. The shelter is a total loss.

"It's kind of sad," said Kevin Sorensen, who got married in the park and held the reception in the picnic shelter. "I hope they rebuild it because this building has been here since I can remember. I just hope it wasn't arson or anything like that."

Due to the suspicious nature of the situation, the fire investigation team was called to the scene. The fire department told FOX 12 that the fire started in a trash can inside the structure, but it is unknown if it was accidental or intentional.

Fire investigators said they were waiting for the city to determine how much the shelter was worth.

If you know anything about this fire, call police at 503-434-7307.
