Family's home burglarized during dad's funeral

THOMPSON'S STATION, TN (WSMV) -

A family was already at their most vulnerable, having just buried a family member, when they returned home to find someone had used their pain to take advantage.

Their house was burglarized during the funeral, and the thief got away with much of the widow's inheritance: a quarter-million dollars worth of precious metal coins.

Julia and Randy Dozier had a wonderful life together, and they lived in Thompson's Station at a former home of George Jones and Tammy Wynette.

But a stroke three years ago changed Randy Dozier's life, and he died June 13.

The family decided to hold his funeral June 21, so they put an announcement in the newspaper for people who wanted to come.

They had no idea who else would use that information.

"The funeral's just kind of putting a bow on it and celebrating a good life. Then you come home and think, 'Damn, what else can happen, really?' This on top of everything else," said victim Chris Dozier.

The Doziers were burglarized, and an estimated $250,000 in silver and gold coins, a Rolex watch and fine jewelry was stolen.

"There was gold - a lot of gold that was taken," Chris Dozier said.

And what was taken was the hard-earned, well-planned retirement for widow Julia Dozier.

"You work all your life and then when you get to my age, it's just a sinking feeling," she said.

Three weeks after the crime, there is still no arrest, although a neighbor saw the burglar at the back door.

"The neighbor saw the guy here and said he saw him sitting at the back door acting like he was measuring something," said victim Adrian Dozier.

The suspect is described as a white man, about 5'11" with a medium build. He was driving a black Nissan or Toyota and is in possession of distinctive, old silver coins and gold pieces.

This family hopes someone is caught soon after a crime that is nothing short of disgusting.

"That's what burns me. Only a sewer rat would read an obituary and see when someone is going to be gone," Chris Dozier said.
