OSP investigating deadly crash near Tillamook

Posted: Updated:

Oregon State Police want to know what caused a deadly crash on Highway 6 near Tillamook on Sunday.

Troopers say a Jeep was heading west near milepost 6 when it left the highway, struck a tree and rolled down an embankment.

It finally came to a stop on its roof submerged in the Wilson River.

Two anglers heard the crash and went to help while calling 911.

They saw the Jeep's tires exposed out of the water and they were able to help the driver out of the SUV, troopers said.

Paramedics took the driver, Juan De La Torre, 23, to Tillamook Regional Medical Center.

Troopers said he's expected to recover.

An ambulance took a passenger, Atilano Vargas Sanchez, 43, to the same hospital.

He later died as a result of the crash, but a cause of death determination is still pending.

OSP said both men were wearing their seat belts at the time of the crash.

As of Monday morning there was no word on what caused the Jeep to leave the road.
