A 70-year-old man was attacked and hit in the head with a skateboard in downtown Portland.
Police said it happened at 2:30 p.m. Monday at Southwest Third and Oak Street.
Witnesses told police that a large group of transient "street kids" were involved in the assault.
The man works at the Portland Outdoor Store and witnesses said he was hosing off the sidewalk when he was attacked.
His employer identified the victim as Larry Allen, the store's assistant manager and an employee of more than 30 years.
"I heard this yelling and screaming, and then I heard this bang and so I ran outside," said Portland Outdoor Store Manager Brad Popick.
"Larry was on the ground face down, he was bleeding everywhere across the face. He had a huge gash out of his forehead extremely deep."
Emergency crews arrived at the scene and found the victim suffering from a head injury. He was taken to a Portland hospital for treatment of a non-life-threatening injury.
"It makes me really mad," said co-worker Miguel Figueroa.
"After it happened, I was constantly walking around almost wanting to cry and scream. I've worked here for seven years and he's one of my best friends. Everyone knows Larry, he's just a good guy, he's just a really good guy."
Employees say they've had problems with this group of "street kids," in recent months and are now hoping this latest attack prompts some sort of change at the city level.
"It makes you wonder why there isn't more being done by the city council," said Popick.
"If it happens once, it will happen again. You are talking about something happening at 2:30 in the afternoon, in broad daylight, on a gorgeous day."
Officers recovered a skateboard that may have been used in the attack. The main suspect is described as a white male, possibly in his 20s, who was not wearing a shirt and has blonde, shaggy hair above his shoulders.
