Deputies: Girls made up attempted kidnapping story

Posted: Updated:

Two 11-year-old girls told authorities a man with a gun driving a van stopped and threatened to kill them if they didn't get inside.

Deputies now say it was a hoax.

The incident was reported to Cowlitz County deputies Monday. The girls said it happened on the 1600 block of N. Second Avenue, Kelso.

On Tuesday, the mother of one of the girls called deputies and said the story was not true. She told investigators the other girl made up the story and asked her daughter to go along with it.

The girl said a van did drive by them, but it didn't stop and the driver did not talk to them. Deputies said the other girl is sticking to the original story, but the sheriff's office said investigators have determined that it is not credible.

Deputies are not identifying the girls in this case.
