Family considers truck driver a hero after 'ultimate sacrifice'

PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

He mysteriously lost control of the commercial truck he was driving and plummeted more than 100 feet to his death, but in doing so, Jon Wright became a hero in the eyes of one family.

The family believes Wright crashed his rig carrying 60,000 pounds of sludge and mud in an attempt to avoid killing them and countless others on 110th Avenue and Foster Road on July 8.

Sarah Price said she was in the car in front of Wright's semi truck that day, and she believes she's still alive because of Wright's actions.

"I looked in my mirror and I saw the truck, and then it went flying by me and off the road, it was that fast," said Price.

"I am very very grateful for him saving my life, every time I pass this road I will of course think of him. I'm sure I will think about him for the rest of my life. He has a special place in my heart."

To express their gratitude for Wright's heroic act, Price and her family wrote a letter to Wright's wife and two kids, his parents and his six other siblings.

"I really do grieve for his loss myself. I don't know the man, but I consider him a friend," said Price's life partner Chad Cook.

"I would have really liked to know him as a person, I'm sad that will never happen."

FOX 12 delivered the family's message to the Wright family home Wednesday afternoon.

Wright's family said he was a devoted father and leaves behind two boys, one the same age as Price's daughter.

"Reading Chad Cook's letter makes me know that there are people out there who care, there is still compassion in this world, and my family thanks you," said Jeff Wright.

"My brother knew something was going to happen, but didn't want any other family to have to suffer like ours is now, he made the ultimate sacrifice."

While police won't confirm exactly how the crash happened, they say the evidence they've gathered so far matches up with what Price is saying.

An official cause of the crash has not been determined.

A memorial fund has been set up in Jon Wright's name at www.giveforward.com to help the family he leaves behind.
