Suicide watch: Volunteers to patrol Vista Bridge

Posted: Updated:
PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

Trained crisis volunteers will be patrolling Portland's Vista Bridge over the next few weeks as the city prepares to add suicide barriers.

The bridge has become infamous because of the number of jumping deaths it has seen. Another earlier this week was the fourth of 2013, making this the deadliest year in at least a decade.

The latest suicide on Tuesday happened one week after City Commissioner Steve Novick announced a plan to install barriers. Following the latest tragedy, Novick reached out to local mental health agencies for support.

Volunteers who have been trained in crisis management will now patrol the bridge until the city can erect the barrier. It's a process that could take several weeks to complete. It will include 9-foot tall, black mesh screens that can be removed to prevent permanent damage to the bridge.
