City council approves funding for CHIERS van

PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

The Portland City Council unanimously approved a funding extension with Central City Concern to help get severely drunk people off the street.

A $924,000 grant was approved to support Hooper's Sobering Station and CHIERS van.

Police work with the van and sobering station to hold and pick up people who may be so intoxicated they need medical help or a danger to people nearby.

Officials say the program is a great alternative to jail, because many of the people they treat are not necessarily criminals.
