ST. HELENS, OR (KPTV) -

Police in St. Helens say they shot a man who threatened them with a knife.

The suspect, who has not been identified, was transported to Emanuel Hospital.  His condition is unknown.

According to St. Helens Police, shortly after 2:00 a.m. today officers responded to a report of a "despondent" man who was armed with a long knife in the 2700 block of Sykes Road.

When they arrived they confronted the suspect, whom they say threatened them.

A police spokesman said officers continued to try and talk the man into giving them his knife as they were walking toward the Best Western Oak Meadows Inn, at 585 South Columbia River Highway.

That's when the suspect charged at one of the officers.  As the threatened officer retreated, the other officers used a Taser to try to stop the suspect.

But the Taser had no apparent effect.  Police say the man became aggressive and came at them again, this time while wielding the knife.

The police spokesman said officers were forced to use their handguns to control the situation and stop the man.

Information about how many times the man was shot and where on his body he was hit has not been released.

The Columbia County Major Crimes Team and Oregon State Police detectives are investigating.
