Police: Kelso man tried to kill wife and himself

Posted: Updated:

A Kelso man is accused of filling his home with propane in an attempt to kill his wife and himself, police said.

Harry Reynolds, 55, was arrested Monday afternoon.

Officers discovered that he had emptied at least one five-gallon propane tank into the home and then waited for his wife to get home, detectives said.

When his wife returned home from work that day, she was greeted by her husband in the driveway. Court documents said Reynolds and his wife went in through the back door of the home, and that his wife immediately smelled gas.

Reynolds, court documents said, made a comment that it was propane, then took out a lighter, stood in his wife's way and pushed her, preventing her from leaving.

Authorities said Reynolds lit the lighter and said, "We're going out with a bang."

But the propane, police said, did not ignite. When he couldn't get the propane to ignite, his wife managed to escape. She ran to the Kelso Police Department to report the incident.

Police responded to the home and took Reynolds into custody for first-degree assault, officers said.

Court documents said Reynolds refused to answer questions about what happened, but said that whatever his wife's version of events happened to be was accurate.
