Spike goes home: After surviving 30 pellet shots, dog has own family
NACOGDOCHES COUNTY, TX (KLTV) -
We have a happy report for you about Spike, the Longview dog who was shot more than 30 times with a pellet gun before being rescued. His family has grown tremendously in the past 24 hours.
"I was really excited to bring him home. I knew he was going to work well with our family. I was just so happy that we were going to be a part of his life," said 12-year-old Jordan Yoder.
Now, Spike is surrounded by a loving a family and some new siblings.
"He is so sweet, and he loves to be around Buddy," Jordan said, referring to their golden retriever.
"He loves to be around the babies and just everyone in our family," Jordan said with a smile.
The Yoders said this will probably be the last addition to their family. With four children and now four pets, they are running out of room.
"We just keep growing. We've got to find a stopping point at some point," said Jordan's dad, Chris Yoder.
"It's nice, but it's crazy," Jordan said.
Chris first learned about Spike when his wife showed him a photo of the injured dog on Facebook.
"It was tough. I mean, he was hurting and I don't like people hurting animals. I couldn't even look at it. I said if he needs a home and he can come to us, I'll take him in a heartbeat," Chris explained.
And while they hope the person responsible for injuring Spike will soon be caught, they are not going to waste any time dwelling on the past.
"I laid in bed thinking about it one night for about five minutes, what someone did to him. I made a conscious decision that I can't, that I don't want to think about that side of things. We are going to take him from this point forward. This is his new life and this is where we are starting from and he is going to have an awesome life. We are going to be a better family because of him," Chris said.
"He's just going to be such a blessing to our family, and we all know it and it's going to be a great experience for everyone," Jordan said.
Besides a little nursing back to health, Spike's needs are pretty simple.
"He's just ready to be loved, that's all he wants. He wants somebody to be close to him, he wants somebody to lean on. He wants somebody to rub on him, and pet him and we can definitely do that," Chris said.
The Longview Police Department are continuing their investigation to determine who is responsible for shooting the dog more than thirty times with a pellet gun.
The Humane Society of the United States is now offering a $5,000 for any information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person responsible.
