Children with vision impairments got to feel some of the biggest cats in the Pacific Northwest.

The Oregon Zoo hosted groups from the Columbia Regional Program for an incredible behind-the-scenes experience last week.

The children got to feel the whiskers, coarse fur and razor-sharp claws of two Amur tigers. The tigers, Nikki and her brother Mikhail, were sedated for routine physical exams at the time.

Smiles and laughter filled the zoo's veterinary medical center July 16 and July 17 for the special events.

The Columbia Regional Program provides specialized educational support for children with conditions like hearing or vision impairments, autism and orthopedic impairments.
