Two big events aiming to coexist in Hillsboro

HILLSBORO, OR (KPTV) -

The Washington County Fair is already underway, and the Oregon International Air Show begins Friday night, right across the street from one another, in Hillsboro.

The events aren't usually held on the same weekend, and organizers of both events had to work together to troubleshoot potential problems like congestion and noise.

"The fair is a really challenging time no matter what year it is, and to have this whole other thing going on with the traffic, and the crowds and the noise (is a concern)," said Emily Cackler, who is showing goats during the fair's 4-H competition. "The noise is the biggest thing that we have to deal with, with our animals."

To compensate for the noise, 4-H moved the judging of smaller animals to last weekend, and the fair added garage doors to all the barns, to better contain animals, who may be spooked by the volume of the air show's main attraction, the Patriots. The group is the only civilian jet aerobatic team in the world, air show organizers said.

Both fair and air show organizers said the bright side of the situation is that the Patriots Jet Team uses sleeker, quieter jets than the Blue Angels, the originally scheduled headliner grounded by federal budget cuts.

Still, farmers at the fair said they'll be watching animals closely during Friday night's fireworks display at the air show, especially the cows who they fear might get tangled in their tethers, if they get frightened by the noise.

Both fair and air show organizers said they have worked together to make sure all the issues were solved, before the events took place, but traffic still could be an issue. Organizers said the air show could attract as many as 8,500 attendees over the weekend, and the fair could do similar attendance.

One pilot said the show is worth any hassle caused by potential traffic problems.

"(The air show) is absolutely worth it," said Rob "Scratch"Mitchell. "I think air shows are one of the last pure venues of great family entertainment, and you never see disappointed people at an air show."

The air show added three parking lots this year. For more information about the air show click here.
