Oregon Zoo begins tuberculosis treatment for elephant

Posted: Updated:
PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

A bull elephant living at the Oregon Zoo is undergoing treatment for tuberculosis. Rama, a male Asian elephant, began a year-long treatment regimen this week.

Zoo officials will also begin preventive treatment on another elephant, Packy, next week.

It's unclear how Rama became infected, but zoo officials say he tested positive in late May. Packy has shown no signs of active infection, but lab work shows that he may have been exposed and could run the risk of infection down the line.

Staff are keeping Rama apart from the rest of the herd during his treatment.

The zoo says they routinely test all their elephants and insist that zoo visitors are not at risk.
