Central Oregon wildfire burns 49,000 acres

WARM SPRINGS, OR (KPTV) -

The Sunnyside Turnoff Fire near Warm Springs continued to grow Friday, with the latest infrared scans showing its size as almost 49,000 acres.

That's about 1,800 acres larger than Thursday.

A group of more than 700 firefighters is working around the clock to put out the flames, and the wildfire was 40 percent contained as of Friday morning.

A cold front pushing through the fire area Friday and Saturday is forecast to create more unstable conditions and active burning conditions due to stronger, gusty winds. As a result, crews expect the fire to grow again.

Kah-Nee-Ta Resort, which was forced to close earlier in the week, has reopened.

Highway 3 is closed to the public between Highway 9 and Highway 8, but local residents are allowed access.
