Bike rider seriously hurt in collision with semi

Posted: Updated:

A bike rider slammed into a semitrailer on Highway 224 in the Milwaukie area Saturday morning.

The bicyclist suffered serious injuries and was taken to a nearby hospital.

State police said 71-year-old Lawrence Mascotte was heading westbound on the paved shoulder of the highway near Southeast Johnson Road.

His bike had a mechanical failure, and he lost control, then collided with the trailer.

Mascotte and his bike came to rest under the trailer.

The semitruck driver, Craig Johnson of Vancouver, was unaware of the collision.

A witness saw the crash and pulled his car in front of the truck to keep it from moving.

Mascotte is being treated at Oregon Health & Science University. He was wearing a bike helmet at the time of the wreck.
