BEAVERTON, OR (KPTV) -

Portland has already banned plastic bags, and now one advocacy group is pushing other metro-area cities to make the same decision.

Environment Oregon collected signatures, and plans to deliver the petitions to the city councils in Lake Oswego, Tigard and Beaverton early next month.

The goal is for those cities to ban the use of plastic bags in stores, as well.

"Most of the people we talk to actually use reusable bags on their own already," said Carl Miller of Environment Oregon. "It's just a matter of getting them out of stores, stop that automatic bagging."

An ordinance in Portland banning plastic bags at 167 stores inside the city limits, mainly grocery stores and pharmacies, began in October 2011. It was expended a year later to include all retail and food businesses in the city by October 2013.

Environment Oregon said it has 1,700 petitions from Beaverton, 1,200 for Tigard and 750 from Lake Oswego supporting a plastic bag ban.
