FOREST GROVE, OR (KPTV) -

A Forest Grove woman is in the hospital after jumping from her burning home. Forest Grove Fire and Rescue said they responded to a call just after 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Grove Mobile Home Park on Pacific Avenue.

According to their investigation, a woman was cooking bacon in a frying pan when the grease went up in flame. She told fire crews that she grabbed the burning pan and tried to transport it outside. On her way to the door, she spilled burning grease on the floor of the kitchen and the living room, which caught the carpet on fire and blocked her exit.

That's when she says she ran to her bedroom and jumped from the window, suffering back and neck injuries.

When crews arrived, they transported the woman to Tuality Hospital in Hillsboro. Her injuries are not life-threatening.

Fire investigators said the fire was put out before they arrived by a quick-thinking neighbor.

Officials said these type of fires are all too common, and they urge people to be smart in the kitchen. First, if you are cooking anything with oil or grease, be sure and have a tight fitting pan lid ready so that you can smother the flames.

Second, stand by your pan at all times, watch the heat and keep a close eye on things before they get so hot that they burn.

Third, never try and carry a burning pan from your home, use the lid to smother the flames, turn off the burner if you can, and get out to call 911 from a safe location.

Finally, if you have children that are at a responsible age to use he kitchen it's also a good idea to talk about these simple kitchen fire safety rules and have them practice them before you let them have free reign of the kitchen alone.
