Jail inmate accused of using officer's pepper spray in escape attempt

A Cowlitz County Jail inmate is accused of snatching the pepper spray from an officer and using it in an attempt to escape.

Jeran Applefield, 19, was in custody Saturday on charges of driving while intoxicated. Investigators said as she was being handcuffed and transferred to a different cell, she attacked a jail officer.

Jail staff said Applefield grabbed the pepper spray from Officer Tina Huft and used it on her. Investigators said Applefield was screaming as workers came to help, and admitted she was attempting to get away.

Huft, 43, had her eyes swollen shut by the pepper spray, but she was not seriously injured, according to jail supervisors.

Applefield is now charged with assault and attempting to escape. Her bail is set at $40,000.
