A man accused of setting a local motel room on fire and then throwing hatchets and knives at police officers during a standoff has pleaded guilty to one charge.

Terry Mortensen pleaded guilty to first-degree arson in court Friday, just as his trial was set to begin. All the remaining charges against him were dismissed.

Mortensen was arrested in April at the Motel 6, 3104 SE Powell Blvd., in Portland. He was wanted for a parole violation and police said he refused to come out of his room.

Other rooms were evacuated after negotiators began talking with the suspect. Officers eventually forced their way inside by blowing the door off the hinges.

Once inside, officers saw fire and smoke coming out of the motel bathroom, and also noticed what appeared to be lighter fluid on the floor of the room. Firefighters moved in to put out the flames.

Meanwhile, police said, Mortensen threw hatchets and knives before trying to climb out a window. Officers managed to take him into custody.

On Friday he was sentenced to two years in prison, with three years of post-prison supervision. He was also ordered to have no future contact with any Motel 6 location.

Mortensen also agreed to waive extradition to Nevada to face charges there.
