I-84 changes cause commute confusion for drivers

Posted: Updated:
PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

A new off-ramp configuration on Interstate 84 appeared to cause confusion for drivers Monday morning, but, so far, there have been no collisions.

Under the new set-up, I-84 westbound drivers can only use a single lane to join I-5 northbound in Portland.

Previously, drivers could use two lanes onto the ramp to I-5 northbound, but then had to quickly choose between two exit-only ramps - one leading to the Rose Quarter and one to I-5. ODOT officials said the last-minute lane changes caused a high number of rear-end and sideswipe crashes.

However, on Monday morning, traffic cameras showed there were plenty of last-minute changes in the new configuration, too. Many drivers expected to be able to exit onto I-5 northbound from their lane, but then had to quickly switch to the exit-only lane.

The changes made over the weekend required ODOT to shut down the freeway. It was the third and final closure of a summer paving project and it reopened Monday at 4:30 a.m.
