Local firm creates art pieces for Ducks' new football center

It's being talked about as one of the most luxurious athletic facilities in the world, and a Portland man's company designed several art pieces inside the Oregon Ducks' new football operations center.

Tim Gallagher is the executive creative director for Gallagher Designs. He's a University of Oregon graduate and a big sports fan. When he got a call a year ago about the possibility of being part of the Ducks' new project, he jumped at the chance, he said.

Gallagher's team had just two-and-a-half days to hammer out ideas inside their northwest Portland office before making their pitch to see if they'd get the job, he said.

"In the next day or two, we got a call back, and they said, 'Yeah, you're the one,'" Gallagher said. "And so we high-fived for a second and then realized we needed to make the stuff."

One of his team's most dominant designs sits in the lobby of the Ducks' new football operations center. Inside a black glass wall are 17-inch player replicas that were created with 3D printer technology and hand-painted by Gallagher. The replicas are designed to show the progression of the team's uniforms from the late 1800s until now, Gallagher said. The wall surrounding the case is angled out to capture the case as if it had been fractured or extruded, according to the design firm's website. The base is also lit with LED lighting.

As recruits walk off the sixth-floor elevator, they'll pass by 211 ducks that represent University of Oregon players who've been drafted into the NFL, Gallagher said. The colors are modeled after the team's helmets, and each duck has a player's initials etched on its side.

"I'm really honored to get the chance to do something like this," Gallagher said. "Not a lot of people get a chance to work on such an awesome building."

Gallagher's team also created displays for all of the Ducks' bowl and conference rings and trophies, he said.

There was a lot of input between Gallagher's team, the University of Oregon and the new building's architect and designers on each piece, Gallagher said. His team also worked with local vendors to help turn some of their ideas into reality, he added.

Gallagher hopes those who pass by his team's work appreciate each piece's "cool factor."

The fact that he's an Oregon Duck himself has made the entire experience that much sweeter, Gallagher said.

"That combination of a beautiful building, Ducks, artwork ... I mean, that's a pretty sweet combination," Gallagher said.

Gallagher told FOX 12 his favorite piece is probably the floating ducks on the sixth floor because it took him back to his sculpting roots.

Gallagher said he was stunned when he walked into the football operations center for the first time after construction was complete.

"Kind of awestruck by it," Gallagher said. "In the fact that I think I told my wife that I don't think I've ever seen a nicer building."
