The founding broadcaster of the Portland Trail Blazers will continue his run as the team's ambassador.
The Blazers announced the extension of Bill Schonely's contract Friday.
"The Schonz," as he's been known to Portland fans for decades, is entering his 10th season as a team ambassador. Schonely makes appearances at community activities and fan and sponsor events supporting the team's outreach mission.
Schonely was the voice of the Blazers from the team's start in 1970 through the 1998 NBA Playoffs. He was recognized with the Curt Gowdy Media Award by the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2012.
The prestigious award is presented annually to members of the print and electronic media whose longtime efforts have made a significant contribution to the game of basketball.
Schonely is involved in helping support numerous charitable causes, including the American Heart Association, Life Flight and the Providence Child Care Center Foundation, where he assists medically fragile children through the "Bill's Kids" program.
The regular season begins for the Blazers on Oct. 30 against the Phoenix Suns.
