Police: McMinnville house rental scammer arrested

Posted: Updated:

A man accused of scamming potential McMinnville home renters out of more than $10,000 has been arrested.

Marion County deputies arrested Jerry Rosenstiel at a mobile home park in Aurora Thursday.

The victims say Rosenstiel, using the name Jerry Carpenter, used Craigslist to advertise a home for rent. Then officers say he met with and took deposit money from more than one dozen different people, telling each of them a house on Manzanita Street would be ready at the start of this month.

Some of the scam victims say Rosenstiel took deposits and showed them the home multiple times, explaining the home would be getting new flooring and cabinets, among other improvements.

"[We] went inside several times, every room, telling me what we're going to do, telling me to pick out what color I want the paint on the walls to be," said Patricia Battle.

Battle said Rosenstiel continued to make excuses for why work was never done on the house. She grew suspicious when he continued to make promises about house, said Battle, so she approached police.

Valerie Moon said she paid Rosenstiel $1,200 and moved her family out of another home in order to move into the house on Manzanita. Now they're staying with relatives.

"I just have too much trust in people, I guess," said Moon. "He made it seem so real so I just listened to him."

According to police, an internet search reveals that Rosenstiel is reportedly a long-term con man who has been involved in numerous scams over the past several years.

Rosenstiel has a long criminal record, including arrests on charges of theft and passing a bad check. Most recently, he was convicted on a theft charge in 2011.

Court records show the home belongs to another man and JP Morgan Chase filed a foreclosure notice earlier this year.

Police are investigating whether or not Rosenstiel knows the owner of the home.

The McMinnville Police Department is seeking information regarding potential additional victims. Anyone with information is requested to contact Sgt. Cully Desmond or Officer Sam Elliott at the McMinnville Police Department at 503-434-6500.
